Planning your trip
When is the best time to go to Iceland?
It depends on what you want to experience. From September to March the island is a winter wonderland, ideal for hunting the Northern Lights and exploring ice caves — and in December the towns glow with Christmas lights. In June purple lupins bloom across the countryside, and June to August brings the Midnight Sun, milder weather and puffins along the coast. September and October bring golden colours, fewer crowds and enough daylight for a full day of adventure.
Is Iceland a good place to vacation with children?
Absolutely. Children can watch steam rise from the earth, stand near powerful waterfalls and learn about our history and folklore — and Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. While many companies have strict age limits, we welcome everyone from seniors to the smallest children.
What should I pack?
Follow the three-layer principle: a thermal inner layer, an insulating layer (fleece or wool) and a waterproof, windproof outer jacket. You also need waterproof hiking boots.
Is the tap water drinkable?
It definitely is — Iceland’s tap water is among the cleanest in the world. Bring a bottle and refill it as you go.
What is the local currency, and can I pay by card?
The Icelandic Króna (ISK). Iceland is nearly cashless — you can pay even the smallest amounts by credit or debit card.
Why Gateway to Iceland
What makes your tours different from larger companies?
We prioritize quality and individual attention over high-volume tourism. Comfortable minibuses keep us flexible through the day, and the small-group format gives you direct access to your local guide for questions and stories — you never feel like just another number in a crowd.
What are your group sizes?
A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 17 guests. Small groups mean a more personal connection with your guide, easier conversation with fellow travellers, and the flexibility to visit hidden spots big buses can’t reach.
What kind of vehicles do you use?
Modern Mercedes Sprinters, chosen for comfort and reliability — 9-seaters or 19-seaters depending on group size. Each has air conditioning, USB chargers at every seat and Wi-Fi.
Are the tours accessible to everyone?
We welcome travellers of all ages. We provide baby seats and can take lightweight, foldable wheelchairs or scooters (up to 25 kg). Leave a note in your booking or email us in advance so everything is ready.
Do you organize private tours or airport transfers?
Yes — private excursions tailored to your interests, and airport transfers. Contact us through the website or at info@gtice.is for a quote.
How can I contact the office?
Call +354 534 4446 or email info@gtice.is. For urgent matters you can reach Gummi at +354 823 9020. We are also on Facebook chat and WhatsApp, but check those less often.
Pickup
Where do you pick up and drop off in Reykjavik?
Across the entire capital area, including Hafnarfjörður, Kópavogur and Mosfellsbær. Whenever possible we pick you up at your hotel; in the city centre, where buses are restricted, we use designated bus stops a short walk from your accommodation.
Do you pick up outside the capital area?
If your hotel is directly on our route out of the city we can often arrange pickup at no extra cost. Email info@gtice.is to check.
Do you pick up from Keflavík Airport?
Generally no, unless you’ve booked the Reykjanes tour, which passes through Keflavík — get in touch to coordinate. For other tours we can arrange a transfer for an extra cost.
Do I need to arrive early for my pickup?
No. Pickup begins exactly at the time on your booking — be ready at your location then. Because we collect guests at several spots, it can take the driver up to 30 minutes to reach you.
Can I wait inside the hotel lobby?
Yes, if you have a clear view of the street. Please don’t wait in your room — drivers can’t leave the vehicle to search the building. Keep your phone on and nearby.
How do I recognize the vehicle?
Our vehicles are plain, without large side logos. Look for a sign in the front window with our logo and the name of your tour.
What happens if I miss my pickup?
We’ll call the number on your booking. To stay on schedule the driver departs 30 minutes after the pickup start time. A missed pickup is non-refundable.
During the tour
What language are the tours in?
English. Some of our guides are multilingual and may share a few facts in other languages.
Is food included in the price?
Only where noted (such as on the Snæfellsnes tour). We make regular stops where you can buy lunch, dinner or snacks.
Are bathrooms available?
Yes, at every major sight, and we stop at gas stations on longer drives. Most are free of charge.
Is there Wi-Fi and charging on the bus?
Yes — free Wi-Fi and USB charging at every seat. Bring your cable.
How much physical activity is involved?
Very little strenuous walking. We park as close to the attractions as possible, so the tours suit seniors and people with limited mobility.
How much time do we spend at each sight?
Typically 45–60 minutes at each main stop, plus 5–10 minute photo stops at viewpoints. Small groups mean no one feels rushed.
Can I bring luggage?
The Sprinters have limited storage, so bring a small day pack. If you’re changing hotels with larger suitcases, tell us in advance.
Should I tip my guide?
Tipping is entirely optional and never expected. The best way to support us is a review on Google or Viator.
Bookings & cancellations
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking ahead, especially in the peak summer and winter seasons. As long as seats are available we accept bookings up to 2 hours before departure.
What if a tour shows as unavailable?
We don’t run every tour daily and may close departures that haven’t reached the minimum. If you’re a group of four or more, email us — we may be able to open a departure just for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Email info@gtice.is or call +354 534 4446.
When will I receive my refund?
Refunds are processed immediately once a cancellation is confirmed; it usually takes 7–10 business days to reach your account.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We operate in most conditions, including rain and snow. If official weather alerts make travel unsafe we cancel and offer a full refund or a date change.
What if I don’t see the Northern Lights?
We only head out when there’s a good chance. If the lights don’t appear, you get a free second attempt on another night. We don’t refund if the lights aren’t seen — nature is beyond our control.
What if my flight is delayed, my ship doesn’t dock, or I get sick?
We always try to be flexible and will reschedule if possible. Otherwise the tour is non-refundable, and we’re happy to provide documents for your travel insurance claim.
What happens if Gateway to Iceland cancels?
We notify you as soon as we can (usually 48 hours ahead or earlier). You can reschedule, upgrade to another tour, join a similar tour with a trusted partner, or get a full refund.
